Anorexia nervosa is one of the three eating disorders of adolescent girls that is prevalent in western countries. Recent studies suggest an increasing trend in nutritional disorders in the urban setting, in a country like ours. Anorexia is generally characterized by self-starvation, denial of hunger, vomiting, usage of pills for suppressing hunger and taking laxatives. Such adolescents usually have a low self esteem, exhibit social withdrawal and may end up in depression. This calls for a timely nutritional and psychological intervention.
